Photovoltaic stacks for concentrators and satellites

For use in earth-based solar concentrators and in satellites, imec develops highly efficient mechanical stacks of solar cells. These are made of several semiconductors (III-V top cells and Ge bottom cells), each absorbing a distinct part of the solar spectrum. The aim is to increase the cell efficiencies to 35-40%.

Imec’s specific stacking approach will improve the spectral robustness of the cells, leading to a significantly higher energy yield.
